Projekt MJ01 - Face Plate for Thin Stuff

At one time I had a need be able to turn an for me unusually thin piece which of course was too wobbly and was not possible to set up. At that point I made face plate with a diameter of 85 mm without holes other than the spindle hole, and thick enough to support at thin job.

I started out from a 12 mm Aluminium plate in which I first drilled and threaded a holöe to fit the spindle. M14x1.0 in this case. By starting with this I know that the face plate will run true after machining. See the mesaures below.

The face plate was made as large as possible to provide a large work surface. The job is then mounted onto the plate using double-stick tape. The job can then easily be worked using light cuts to avoid deformation. For jobs that does not need machining close to the center, the job can be supported using tailstock support alone.

This was really simple to do and very useful when nothing else works.
